Mukhwaas Anyone?

In late 2005, I assisted a family who had a wonderful event at a local hotel here in Atlanta. The bride, Archoo, (name has been intentionally changed for this passage) was a Gujrati bombshell and looked stunning at her event-

Well archoo got married on a very busy holiday weekend. And the previous day/night we had a 400 person event as well.

I pulled an overnight to help Archoo. Speaking of overnight setups, it is so common to be up continuously for 30-40 hours. But when the mandap setup is competed, there’s a feeling of euphoria seeing an overnight setup be completed at sunrise. Come morning you are ready for showtime.

Dirty Desi Bathrooms

Dirty Bathrooms? Why don’t you Hire a bathroom attendant like Mintoo!

Why do Desis have to make the bathroom so dirty? And why are public bathrooms at Desi establishments always Gross?

This reminds me of a story. Years ago, I had a bride, Mintoo (name has been intentionally changed for this passage) and she was having her function in a “center” leased in a facility where there are a lot of other desi stores—

Chicken Makhani Anyone?

Besides being a wedding designer, I can make a signature makhani sauce that I’m known for amongst my dinner invitees.   What does chicken makhani have to do with decor?  read on……In November 2006, I assisted a family who had a interfaith wedding ceremony.  I don’t recall the name of the bride as I never met her, only her mom.  Let’s call her “Amita auntie” for this passage.   Amita had a great experience working with us-  she downsized/simplified all her decor for the elder daughters wedding.  Nevertheless, she had an overall decent event.Lets fast forward 3 years, Amita auntie’s 2nd daughter is ready to get married and of course they inquire about our decor services for daughter number #2.  Naturally they first begin speaking to all the vendors whom they had a good experience with and for the most part it was all repeat vendors.

The Grand Entrance

Months ago, I had a (5) HOUR selection meeting with a family where the bride just came from India. She was used to seeing “India” weddings and humbly speaking I can’t compare to those Crazy setups especially with an American USD budget!

She kept on challenging me in a hip Mumbian Accent: “Oh Sushil! We need to make a grand appearance, and when we enter the stage, we would like to enter from the rear of the stage, TOP! She kept on saying rear Top and referencing her cousin’s wedding where they entered the stage off of a suspended moon- YES, a

moon!!!

The Bride asks why can’t “Me and my fiancé enter from the top (stage) to make our grand entrance?”

Dirty Competition

Summer 2005, UE was pretty new to the industry so talks of any new decor competition would raise my eyebrows! I bumped into a well known indian photographer whose specialty besides taking wonderful photos is knowing “something about everyone.” Me and the photographer began talking and he mentioned that a “native Atlantan couple” is starting a decor business. Additionally this husband and wife duo own furniture stores in malls and buy containers from china. m I didn’t think much of this trivial fact but kept it dormant in my head.

………Now the fun starts……….

Late Fall 2005: UE continues to make strides in the decor scene and like anything new, it takes time. I worked hard by building designs and creating custom pieces that I guarded because they are proprietary. We used to meet potential clients in my humble condo normally when my 2 year old was napping.

Desi Diaper-Changer

One time a very popular “auntie” restauranteur was telling me a story. I was setting up an event in the banquet hall for an evening event. There was an afternoon event that was just completed. While setting up, amidst the earlier partys trash, I noticed they left a dirty diaper under one of the banquet rounds. This means that some dirty desi changed their kids diapers and left it for the restauraunt crew to pick it up! I did NOT check if it were Poo or pee, so don’t ask!

I pointed it out to her and she told me (in Indian Accent) “One time there was lady and she change diaper on the table!” She continued to tell me as Animated could be, that she went up to the “diaper changer invitee” and asked her “instead of changing diaper on my table, where people eat, why don’t you go to bathroom or to your car?” Apparently the diaper changer invitee wasn’t phased by this question. So the auntie restauranteur pleaded with her and asked “Do you change your kids diaper on table at your house?!”

Hilarious!!!

She makes a good point- but it was funny hearing her tell the story of the Dirty Desi Diaper changer!
